From MH laboratory: protein A to Z

Everything you need to know about protein, that is part I of the compendium of knowledge about the basic ingredients of your diet prepared by MH experts. Find out why, how much and what proteins you need to build your muscles and carve out your figure

Nearly 73 tons of food lands in the average guy’s stomach all his life. And although almost everyone knows that the protein it contains is a building block, and carbohydrates and fats are the fuel from which it gets energy, still few can say what happens to these ingredients inside our bodies after eating. The knowledge about this subject does not have to be complicated, and its assimilation is difficult.

A thorough analysis, which we have carried out together with Men’s Health expert, Dr. Marek Szołtysik from the Wrocław University of Life Sciences, will allow you to better understand these processes, so that your activities focused on achieving better results in building muscles, practicing sports or fighting against obesity are much easier.

From the pool of 20 amino acids, which are molecular building blocks of proteins, the human body is able to produce 11. The remaining 9 must be provided with food.

There is no need to convince anyone about the need for nutritional support in sport. The demand for basic nutritional components – protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals – with regular practice of many strength and endurance disciplines or even regular recreational sports increases several times. A huge effort performed at the borderline of human capabilities also requires the administration of other preparations, which not only support the training effect, but at the same time prevent excessive overload and exploitation of the athlete’s body.

In this article we will explain to you the role that protein plays in the body of a man who wants to improve his musculature, get rid of excess fat and achieve better results in sport. You will find out why proteins are so important, how many and what proteins you need, and when and in what amounts you should eat, when you build weight or want to carve out muscles.

Proteins – irreplaceable substances

Protein, also called protein, is a strategic support factor that every athlete should put first. Although more than 170 years have passed since its discovery by the Dutch researcher Mulder, the knowledge related to this group of compounds is still being discovered, surprising scientists with new facts.

Protein accounts for about 20% of human body weight and belongs to a substance that cannot be replaced or stored in the body. In the body, proteins are mainly used to build new and rebuild used cells. They are part of immune bodies of enzymes catalyzing biochemical changes and body fluids. It should be emphasized that proteins are not only building material, but also burn, providing the body with energy.

Proteins are built of amino acids and their composition determines their nutritional value. From the pool of 20 amino acids, which are the molecular building blocks of proteins, man is able to produce 11, while 9 are substances which the human body is not able to produce on its own, so we have to supply them together with food.

The content of branched chain amino acids (BCAA) is particularly important. These compounds are a very important component of protein supplements. It is believed that they form almost a quarter of the amino acid composition of muscle proteins, which in regular sporting activities causes an increased demand for these components, regardless of the type of sport. During prolonged exercise, branched-chain amino acids are often used as a source of energy, contributing to maintaining a constant level of glucose in the blood and maintaining balance during training.
